Location

Lakin is the county seat of Kearny County in southwestern Kansas. The city lies along the Arkansas River and U.S. Highway 50, providing connections to Garden City and other High Plains communities. Neighborhoods, schools, and services are concentrated around a central civic area.

History

Lakin was established during the expansion of the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe Railway and named after David Lakin, a railroad treasurer. Agriculture and ranching formed the foundation of the city’s economic and cultural identity.
